The Rottweiler is a breed of domestic dog believed to be descended from the Roman drover dogs and further developed by the Germans in a town that became known as Rotweil (the red tile). The dogs were known in German as "Rottweiler Metzgerhund," meaning "Rottweil butcher's dogs," because one of their uses was to herd livestock and pull carts laden with butchered meat to market. The Rottweiler is one of the oldest herding breeds, which means they were bred to be strong and are intelligent enough to perform specific tasks. Not only a robust yet agile dog, the Rottweiler is also extremely loyal with natural guarding instincts. The Rottie is a very loving companion but fierce protector, so proper socialization is necessary. A Rottweiler loves to be with his/her pack, but left alone the dog can become overly territorial and, worse case scenario, aggressive. The dog needs a job to do as they were bred to do work. A Rottweiler that is not socialized and gets little exercise has greater potential for problems. Therefore, a Rottweiler is not for everyone. We strongly urge all of our clients to consider the breed's needs and objectively assess whether a Rottweiler is for them. Rotties are typically fond of children, obedient, loyal, and just flat out awesome! However, their "master" needs to be firm, consistent, patient, and intentional when it comes to owning one of these dogs.
